He is the son of Henry F. & Ruby Mae (Brock) Stroup. He married Margaret M. Donovan on February 20, 1941 in the Catholic Church at New Alma, Kansas. He entered the Air Corp in 1942 serving in the Pacific Campaign. His daughter Pam Johansen preceded him in death.
