Ashland Gazette Feb 2008 SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Harold H. HOFFMAN, 88, died Feb. 2, 2008. Harold was born Oct. 29, 1919 in Ashland to Oscar and Gretchen (Moller) Hoffman. He was married to Josephine Stewart on June 30, 1939. They settled in Ashland. On Dec. 27, 1943, he entered the U. S. Army at Ft. Crook. His wife died of cancer on July 7, 1994. Harold moved to Omaha. In 1999, he moved back to Topeka, Kan. Harold is preceded in death by his brothers George and Arthur; wife Josephine; oldest son Karl. Funeral services Feb. 9, 2008 at the Marcy Chapel in Ashland with burial at Ashland Cemetery. There was a flag presentation by Ashland American Legion Post 129. ASHLAND - Sadie Quinn LIVERS, 8, of rural Ithaca, died Feb. 3, 2008 at Children's Hospital in Omaha following a two-year battle with cancer. Born at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln on Dec. 10, 1999 to Steven E. and Teresa M. (Henkenius) Livers. Preceded in death by infant twin brother and sister, Adam and Paige Livers, and grandparents, Keith and Glendora Livers. Funeral services held Feb. 8, at the United Methodist Church in Ashland. Interment at the Ashland Cemetery. Marcy Mortuary, Ashland, is in charge of arrangements. OMAHA - Michael A. ALBERT, 54, of Omaha, died Jan. 19 in Denver. Colo. Born Oct. 26, 1953 in Lincoln. His father, Patrick Albert, preceded him in death. JOPLIN, Mo - Frank E. CHMELKA, 89, died Jan. 24, 2008 in Joplin, Mo. Born Dec. 27, 1918 to Frank J. and Christina (Mach) Chmelka on a farm southwest of Prague. Served in the U. S. Army in Hawaii after Pearl Harbor was bombed. He retired from the army in 1963 but later re-enlisted and served in Viet Nam. Preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Raymond and Richard Chmelka; and sister, Clara Warner. Campbell-Biddlecome Funeral Home of Seneca, Mo, was in charge of the arrangements. MODESTO, Calif. - Patrica Ann "Patty" Croghan HANNIFIN, 60, died Feb. 10 in Modesto, Calif. She was the daughter Bernard and Dolly Croghan. Preceded in death by a daughter, Marlo Hannifin. Burial will be in Modesto, Calif. TULLAHOMA, Tenn. - Irene Margret DOCEKAL, 84 died Jan. 26, 2008 in Tullahoma, Tenn. She was born June 20,1924, in Dwight. In 1952 she married Emil Joel Docekal and they moved to Atlanta, Ga. where he attended Georgia Tech. Preceded in death by her husband; her twin sister, Inez, sister, Marie, and brothers, Leroy, Dick, Kenny. There will be a Memorial Mass in Chicago at a later date. Tullahoma Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. ASHLAND - Freeman C. HAASE, 82, of Ashland, formerly rural Greenwood died Feb 6, 2008 at his home in Ashland. Born west of Prairie Home, on April 21, 1925 to Albert and Ruth (Hall) Haase. Served in U. S. Army during WWII and was a prisoner of war in Germany. Evelyn Kupke and Freeman were married Mar 28, 1948 at Trinity Lutheran Church at Murdock. Preceded in death by his parents and sister Margaret Balogh. Funeral Service was held Feb. 9, 2008 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Murdock, NE. Interment at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 129. COLON - Tamara L. "Tammi" KAVAN, 43, of Colon, died Feb. 11, 2008 from cancer. Born Nov. 3, 1964, to Joe and Wanda (Leighton) Sanderson in Fremont. On Jan. 7, 1984, she married Dale Kavan at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Her father preceded her in death. Mass of Christian Burial held Feb. 14, 2008 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wahoo. Interment at St. Francis Cemetery in Wahoo. WAHOO - John C. LARSEN, 88, of Wahoo, formerly of Omaha, died Jan. 29, 2008 in Wahoo. Born on Nov. 21, 1919, to John C. Larsen and Jo-sephine (Clark) Larsen in Omaha. He was a WWII veteran, who served in th USMC. He worked as a switchman for Union Pacific Railroad. He was preceded in death by his wives, Marie Carper Larsen and Cecelia Sargent Larsen; and a son-in-law, Michael J. Dugan. Funeral services were held Feb. 2 at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in Omaha. Interment was at Calvary Ceme-tery with full military honors. CEDAR BLUFFS - Audrey E. MAY, 92, of Cedar Bluffs, died Jan. 31, 2008 in Fremont. May was born Feb. 4, 1915 to Davis and Maude (Corson) Jackson in Lynch. Married Arthur E. May on Oct. 31, 1936 at Elk Point, S.D. Preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 1, 2004; her parents; her stepmother, Mary Bishop Jackson; four sisters, Leara Curfman, Vava Jackson, Phyllis Pigg and Grace Jackson; and a step-grandchild, Keith Polen. Funeral services were held Feb. 5 at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Burial was at Ridge Cemetery in Fremont. VALPARAISO - Raynold E. VANICEK, 68, of Valparaiso, died Jan. 31, 2008 in Omaha. Born Sept. 9, 1939 to Ernest Raymond and Blanche (Rehovsky) Vanicek in Valparaiso. Enlisted in the U. S. Army. Preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Opal Worden, and infant sister, Margaret Ann Vanicek. Funeral services were held Feb. 4 at the First United Methodist Church in Wahoo. Interment was at St. Mary's Cemetery in Valparaiso with military graveside services conducted by the Nebraska Army National Guard Military Funeral Honors Team. PORTLAND, OR - Monte Emmette WALTER, 85, died recently in Portland, Ore. He was born on June 25, 1922, in Wahoo to Finley and Wilma (Steele) Walter. Entered the Navy and spent most of WWII in the Pacific. In 1945, he married Doris Jean Smith in Oregon. They were later divorced. Married Billie Ann Beaver in 1979 and moved to Wilsonville, Ore., in 1980. Preceded in death by his parents; his wife; sister, Diana E. Hooper; brother, Finley E. Walter; a brother-in-law and a nephew. A service was held Dec. 21, 2007 at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore. WAHOO - Rosalia C. WOTIPKA, 92, of rural Wahoo, died Feb. 10, 2008 in Lincoln. Born on Sept. 7, 1915, to Ferd and Christina (Lukas) Haba in Colon. Married Frank J. Wotipka on Sept. 21, 1936 in Wahoo. Bonita "Bonnie" Rae Pike Coffin was born Nov. 18, 1939 in Ashland to David and Audrey (Gilbert) Pike. On April 18, 1959 she married Don Coffin. MACHOVEC, 97, of Wahoo, died Feb. 15 at her home in Wahoo. Born June 13, 1910 to Frank and Adele (Tawney) Hills at Malmo. She taught school at District 70 near Wahoo for several years. On Sept. 4, 1933, she married Frank T. Machovec at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wahoo. Preceded in death by her husband; her parents, a grandson, Christopher Everett; a great-grandson, Benjamin Watson; sisters, Frances Banghart and Alta Smith; and brothers, George and Ray Hills. Mass of Christian Burial held Feb. 21 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wahoo. Interment will be at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery. WAHOO - Robert "Bob" Lee NELSON, 65, of Wahoo, died Feb. 13, 2008. Born Oct. 6, 1942, to Lawrence and Ruth (Clouse) Nelson in Wahoo. He served in the U. S. Army in the Vietnam War. His parents and a brother, Donald Nelson, preceded him in death. Memorial services were held Feb. 16 at the Pruss-Nabity Funeral Home. Marriage to James Cizek on Jan. 3, 1927 at St. Wenceslaus Church in Wahoo. Preceded in death by her husband, brothers, Charles and Joseph Pospisil, and sisters, Vlasta Daly and Helen Cain. Erickson was born on Aug. 20, 1915 to Charles and Antonia (Jasa) Trutna on a farm west of Wahoo. She married Martin G. Erickson on Jan. 15, 1944. Her husband died in 1956. Later she and her children moved into Wahoo with her widowed mother. Preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers, Edward and Theophil; sister, Anna (McKlem) Wolf; son-in-law, Ben Thompson, step-grandson, Ben Thompson, Jr., and step-great-grandson, Thomas Lusson. Born on Dec. 17, 1957, to Willard and Jerrine (Anderson) Kohlhof in Norfolk. Married Mark Bierman on June 17, 1976 in Battle Creek. Married David R. Higel on July 27, 1991 in Lincoln. MAASSEN, 95, of Wahoo, died Feb. 20, 2008. Born on July 18, 1912 to Herman John and Frieda Elizabeth (Abels) Maassen in Millard. On Mar 22, 1934 he married Lavada Lorraine Wicht at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Yutan. Preceded in death by his wife, a son, Richard, a daughter-in-law, Kaye, a brother, Ted, and sister, Louise Abramson.
